A Fracture is a break in the continuity of the bone. They must be treated by an expert and that too well in time. If treated properly, the fractures heal without any deformity and without any movement limitation. Whether it is a complicated hip, pelvic fracture or a simple break in the arm, they both need immediate treatment.

Fractures can be of many types, these are as per the direction and angle of fracture:

1. Transverse Fracture – Transverse fracture shows a horizontal fracture line and is one of the most common types of fracture. The transverse fractures generally heal without any deformity.

2. Oblique Fractures – As mentioned in the name, the fracture line is oblique or angled.

3. Comminuted Fractures – These fractures have more than just a break in the bone. The bone is divided into many pieces. It requires surgical fixation to get healed properly.

4. Chip Fracture – This is a minor type of fracture where a little chip of bone is removed.

5. Stress fracture – This occurs due to fatigue or overexertion. It is most commonly seen in athletes and military people.

The fracture can also be

1. Stable – Both the ends of the bone are stable and are in perfect alignment.

2. Unstable or displaced Fracture – The bone is fractured and is also not in line. One end is displaced in another direction thus requiring manipulation or surgery.

Treatment of Fractures

The treatment option of fractures are

1. Plaster Cast – The plaster cast is applied to immobilize the stable fractures to ensure proper healing. If the bone is displaced, then the reduction is done and then plaster cast is applied.

2. Brace or Splint – The splint or brace provides less immobility than the plaster cast. It is indicated in the minor fractures or the hairline fractures.

3. Surgical Fixation – This is known as the internal fixation. The bone ends are fixed with the help of plates, rods, and screws. The severely displaced and comminuted fractures are fixed by this open reduction and internal fixation method.
